Case Study
Electrical Ducting Underground Installation
Directional Drilling Installation of Electrical Ducts under a Busy Lorry Park at a Major Distribution Centre in Leicester
Project Overview
Our team was contracted to install two 100-meter SDR11 pipes, intended as electrical ducts, at a key distribution centre for ASDA. This installation required us to drill under a bustling lorry park without disrupting the day-to-day operations of the facility, which serves as a central hub for distribution logistics.
Objectives and Challenges
The primary objective was to safely and precisely install the two ducts, each spanning 100 meters, to accommodate electrical lines necessary for the centre’s operations. Given the high traffic and activity levels at the lorry park, the challenge was to complete the project efficiently without impacting the movement of vehicles or jeopardizing the busy schedule of deliveries and distributions.
Specific challenges included:
Minimizing Disruptions: The lorry park was operational 24/7, necessitating a drilling approach that wouldn’t interfere with its flow.
Subsurface Conditions: The underground conditions had to be thoroughly assessed to avoid complications during drilling.
Solution and Approach
To address these challenges, we opted for a directional drilling approach that would allow us to precisely control the drilling path. We used advanced tracking technology to ensure accuracy, with the boreholes drilled to specific depths to avoid existing infrastructure and reduce the chance of accidental interference with other services.
Technical Steps Taken:
Planning and Preparation: Detailed surveying of the area, assessing underground conditions and potential obstacles.
Directional Drilling Execution: The two ducts were drilled at a depth of 1.5mts deep avoiding all existing services within this lorry park
Quality and Safety Measures: Continuous monitoring throughout the process to ensure safe and precise alignment with project specifications.
Results and Outcomes
The project was completed on schedule, with both 100-meter pipes successfully installed and precisely aligned with the electrical requirements of the site. Our team’s careful planning and execution meant zero impact on the lorry park’s operations, which allowed ASDA’s distribution centre to continue functioning seamlessly.
Client Impact
By using directional drilling, we provided ASDA’s distribution centre with a cost-effective and efficient solution that met all technical requirements while preserving the integrity of their facility’s day-to-day operations.
