What is
Impact Moling?

Impact Moling is a smart, trenchless way to install water pipes, gas pipes and conduits underground, without the need to dig trenches. Our specialist equipment creates tunnels beneath the surface, allowing us to install pipes and conduits without digging up your property.

How Does It Work?

Picture a mole burrowing underground. That’s essentially what happens with moling. Our specialised equipment creates tunnels beneath the surface, allowing us to install pipes and conduits without digging up your property.

Utility Pipe Tracing and Surveys

As we replace services underground, we are faced with multiple dangers such as electric cables and gas pipes. Our specialist equipment locates other utilities such as these to ensure a safe comprehensive installation, avoiding other existing underground installations.

We use tracer cables to help us locate plastic pipes and drainage systems. We can determine as the depth of the other services, in order to avoid them and also locate them for our clients.

To locate and assist other companies with underground works we carry out full mapping of large areas such as estates and car parks.

Multi-Utility Installations

We utilise the same no-dig methods and equipment to install a wide range of underground services.

For example, we install water, gas, electric, data, fibre and drainage using moling and directional drilling trenchless technologies.

We also use trenching methods where trenchless methods are not viable.

We have carried out multi-utility installations for domestic customers, utility providers, commercial clients and even railway projects.

Moling FAQs

Moling is a trenchless technique that enables us to install or replace pipes without digging large trenches. It works by creating a small tunnel underground, allowing us to lay new pipes or replace old ones without damaging the surface above. This method is perfect for protecting driveways, gardens, and other landscaping features.

The Mole or Soil Displacement Hammer is a machine that’s used for precise underground pipe installations. It works by using air pressure to drive the mole forward, pushing soil into the surrounding area as it moves. This creates a tunnel where pipes or cables can be easily pulled through, either immediately or later. The mole uses a two-stroke method, which ensures it stays on course and accurately installs pipes. It can be used both horizontally and vertically for a variety of applications.

To locate underground pipes and cables, we use two tools called the Genny and the CAT. The Genny sends a signal through the underground services, such as pipes or cables, and is placed on the surface above them. The CAT then detects this signal as it’s moved along the ground, helping us pinpoint the exact location and depth of the underground services. Using these tools together ensures we can safely map out utility lines before digging or drilling, preventing any accidental damage.

In good ground conditions, we can use a mole to install pipes underground for up to 20 meters in a single mole shot, the process is then repeated for longer distances
